Members of the mCenter Faculty Advisory Board have a range of interests in topics relating to mobilities research, and come from across the University, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the School of Public Health, the Antoinette Westphal School of Media Arts & Design, and the Earle Mack School of Law.
Dr. Mimi Sheller, Professor of Sociology in the Department of Culture and Communication, has been appointed Director of the mCenter. Dr. Sheller received her A.B. in History and Literature from Harvard University and her MA and PhD in Sociology and Historical Studies from the New School for Social Research. She has played a central role in advancing the new mobilities paradigm within the social sciences, co-founding the Centre for Mobilities Research at Lancaster University in the U.K. and the international journal Mobilities. Through her own research on automobility, tourism mobilities, and Caribbean mobilities, she has helped to develop new theoretical approaches and methodological innovations for studying the complex movements of people, objects, information, images, and ideas.
She will be introducing this innovative field to Drexel students through her undergraduate course “Mobilities: Cities on the Move” and graduate seminar in “Contemporary Social Theory: The New Mobilities Paradigm”. Mobilities research will be brought to Drexel and the wider Philadelphia community through seminars, symposia, art exhibits, conferences and other events hosted by the mCenter.
