Announcing the Mobile Lives Forum
The SNCF Mobile Lives Forum is a space for research and exchange, where we will explore the mobilities of the future. Its purpose is to creatively compare diverse viewpoints on the evolution of the relationship between lifestyles and geographical spaces via physical and virtual communication. Its goal: to anticipate potential futures.
Understanding in order to act
The world is changing radically. So are different forms of mobility. The FORUM seeks to understand the whys and hows and their impact on geographical spaces, and to devise new modes of action for citizens, elected officials and transportation providers.
Our steering committee as a research institution
The FORUM, based in Paris and funded by the French rail company SNCF, has created an original steering and strategic foresight committee comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds and profiles – among them, researchers in the human, economic and social sciences from France and abroad, intellectuals, visual artists, photographers, writers, entrepreneurs and SNCF personnel. Presided over by Vincent Kaufmann, mobility expert and professor of urban sociology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the committee will serve as a veritable research institution. [mCenter Director Mimi Sheller is a member of the Steering Committee]
Unique measures for expressing unique viewpoints
The FORUM gives rise to new alliances between academic research and artistic sensibility, combining reasoning, emotion and imaginaries to cultivate fresh knowledge. The FORUM will devise original measures that combine the plethora of perspectives and practices of researchers, users, personnel and artists. The FORUM will likewise utilize comparisons and experiments from abroad.
Bringing debates and experimentation to society
The MOBILE LIVES FORUM will both address and publicize today’s most pointed issues and debates, develop research activities and strategic foresight, spread and promote knowledge and initiate experimentation, especially with regard to SNCF and its partners. The FORUM intends to share these questions of mobility and common references with the different audiences concerned.
Publications
The first book published by the Forum is Mobile/Immobile: Choices and rights for 2030. Excerpts from the book, including a chapter by mCenter Director Mimi Sheller on “Creating Sustainable Mobility and Mobility Justice” can be downloaded for free at this link.
